Print Fit is an independent Torides tool for people preparing a photo for a standard print or frame. It joins a local image preview with the physical measurements needed to choose between cropping and white space.
The calculation
Let the source be W × H pixels and paper be P × Q inches, with a minimum border b. The available image window is (P − 2b) × (Q − 2b). For Fill, the scale in inches per source pixel is the larger of (P − 2b)/W and (Q − 2b)/H. For Fit, it is the smaller.
Native PPI is 1 divided by that scale. Fill retains a source rectangle of window width/scale by window height/scale. Crop loss is 100 × (1 − retained area/original area). Fit retains the whole source; the unused space is split equally between opposite edges. Crop-position sliders move the retained rectangle inside the original.
Exports round paper inches × chosen export PPI to integer pixels. This can create a small rounding difference for metric sizes. Source sampling can involve fractional pixel boundaries. The browser resamples into a JPEG; it does not preserve the source file byte for byte.
White-background removal
The PNG transparency tool uses a color threshold, not an AI subject detector. Distance from white is 255 minus the smallest red, green or blue channel. At or below your tolerance, selected pixels become transparent. The softening range adds a linear alpha transition beyond that threshold.
Edge-connected mode visits four-directionally adjacent eligible pixels starting at the image border. Already transparent pixels are passable. Enclosed white areas are left unchanged unless you choose All white. White foreground touching the background can be removed too. For originally opaque transition pixels, the tool also subtracts the estimated white contribution to reduce fringes.
The new alpha is multiplied by the original alpha. Every adjustment starts from the original image, so repeated changes do not progressively erase it. Processing runs in a local browser worker. The output retains pixel dimensions, but browser PNG export does not promise original metadata, animation, bit depth or color profiles.
What we cannot measure
We do not predict focus, viewing distance, ink, paper texture, printer dot patterns, color fidelity, lab trim, frame coverage or borderless enlargement. The browser handles image decoding and orientation; check the preview before exporting. We do not offer profile-aware soft proofing, HEIC/RAW/PDF import or archival conversion.
How the guides are made
Published October 4, 2026 by Torides. These five articles combine linked manufacturer/software documentation with original geometric examples. They are AI-assisted desk research, not claims of hands-on printer or lab testing. Hypothetical device settings are explicitly labeled. The demonstration grid and proof PDFs are generated reference geometry, not photographic quality tests.
Calculations are checked with executable tests. Documentation links have a visible check date. We revise material when a source or verified correction changes the decision, rather than creating near-duplicate pages for each paper size. There are no affiliate links or sponsored recommendations on this site.
